Transforming a Shower: Acrylic Pan to Ceramic Tile

Sometimes, the smallest issues can lead to bigger problems. One of our recent projects began with a customer noticing a weak spot around the drain of their acrylic shower pan. The pan seemed fine at first, but stepping on it revealed an underlying issue. Here’s how we turned the situation into a beautiful, functional ceramic tile shower.

Diagnosing the Problem

The customer was concerned about the softness around the drain. After inspecting the shower, it became clear that the acrylic pan was compromised and needed replacing. The customer opted for a ceramic tile shower pan, a much sturdier solution.

Removing the Old Setup

We started by removing the glass door and partition for easier access. Then, we carefully took out the first row of wall tiles and proceeded to remove the acrylic pan in three sections. As we did, we discovered cracks in the fiberglass, but the real issue lay beneath.

Uncovering Hidden Damage

Beneath the pan, we found a large hole in the concrete surrounding the drain, measuring about 2 feet by 1.5 feet. Further investigation revealed that the P-trap wasn’t connected to the drain pipe, causing water to drain into the ground beneath the slab. This was an oversight during the original construction.

Fixing the Plumbing

Our plumber replaced the faulty drain pipe, properly connecting the P-trap to ensure proper drainage. This was essential for the shower’s long-term functionality.

Repairing the Concrete Slab

We installed rebar to support the concrete slab, filled the hole, and leveled the new concrete to match the surrounding surface.

Installing the New Shower Base

Next, we installed a PVC membrane with pre-sloped Styrofoam pieces to ensure proper drainage. Then, we laid the mud base, wall tile, and floor tile.

Final Touches

Once the tile set, we grouted and replaced the glass door and partition, completing the renovation.

Conclusion: Successful Transformation

The project ended with a sturdy, beautiful ceramic tile shower pan that solved both the drainage issues and the aesthetic concerns. The customer was thrilled with the results, and we were proud of another successful project.
