Diagnosing the Problem

The customer was concerned about the softness around the drain. After inspecting the shower, it became clear that the acrylic pan was compromised and needed replacing. The customer opted for a ceramic tile shower pan, a much sturdier solution.

Uncovering Hidden Damage

Beneath the pan, we found a large hole in the concrete surrounding the drain, measuring about 2 feet by 1.5 feet. Further investigation revealed that the P-trap wasn’t connected to the drain pipe, causing water to drain into the ground beneath the slab. This was an oversight during the original construction.

Fixing the Plumbing

Our plumber replaced the faulty drain pipe, properly connecting the P-trap to ensure proper drainage. This was essential for the shower’s long-term functionality.

Repairing the Concrete Slab

We installed rebar to support the concrete slab, filled the hole, and leveled the new concrete to match the surrounding surface.

Installing the New Shower Base

Next, we installed a PVC membrane with pre-sloped Styrofoam pieces to ensure proper drainage. Then, we laid the mud base, wall tile, and floor tile.

Final Touches

Once the tile set, we grouted and replaced the glass door and partition, completing the renovation.
